Fantasia 2020: A Strange Calm Review

Fantasia 2020: A Strange Calm Review

Miles and Rosie are children who are on a quest for fourth of July fireworks. The destination of said fireworks are at the "top of the world". Rosie is smart miles is a jarring child. It's a 14 minute short film and it left me shook. Children in danger of adults is a sensitive subject but it is handled well here. More of a cautious warning then a celebration of harm. You are quickly placed into the perspective of young Rosie and the anxiety levels increase dramatically.

A seemingly light adventure dilly dally quickly becomes frightening and nerve racking. The fast transition of light to dark, from innocent youth to malevolent adult will catch you off guard. The crescendo of the cacophony becomes deafening drums of fear. Luckily, a sudden jerk and a twist ends and the torment and the film. Awareness replaces the stress. Our kids are vulnerable and it takes a planet to raise a child. This is an in gentle reminder. - Oz
