Fantasia 2020: Lapsis Review

Fantasia 2020: Lapsis Review

While fairly open ended, Lapsis still somehow manages to be a satisfying film. Although it raises more questions than it answers this film has a lot to say. In a parallel universe of advancing technology the issues faced by the protagonist will be familiar to many – from conspiracy theories, misinformation, mysterious illness, and the ever increasing pressures to both keep up with and compete with advancing technology for jobs. Dean Imperial’s performance as Ray was a delight to watch as the Fred Flinstonesque everyman struggled through a perilous jungle of mobile phone apps and alternative health advice. If you can get past wondering why quantum computers would require cabling or other technical quandaries the human aspects are an entirely enjoyable watch and the issues raised are undeniably relevant. Noah Hutton is a director and writer to keep an eye on. I’m looking forward to what other visions he brings to the screen. - Rachel Jones
