X-Factor 229 Cover

After Peter David was quite vocal about their being a death in X-Factor 227, readers were dissapointed to find out that none of the deaths (there were 4) actually meant anything at all. With the release of the cover for issue 229, one must ask - is Peter David poking fun of himself with this one?

Ellis and Templesmith Return to Fell

fell
Yesterday at the Comiket comics and art festival in London, actor/comedian Lenny Henry interviewed Warren Ellis live on stage. Amongst other things, Ellis revealed Fell, his detective series with Ben Templesmith, will return for 8 issues in 2012. Ellis’ original plan for fell was to offer a cheap, 18-20 page comic that felt like 22 pages by using 9 panel layouts, weighty dialogue and prose supplementary material. Bleeding Cool has the report.

Tyrone posted yesterday about Marvel offering digital downloads for their Ultimate line of comics. Today io9 reported Marvel will also be offering free digital downloads with their upcoming series of graphic novels, Season One. This is a bold move for Marvel, and it could indicate a company wide, even industry wide, shift in comics distribution. It looks suspiciously like King City. Could this be the long awaited King City collection, or a new series? The series was originally published by Tokyopop, and it looks like Image is once again coming to their rescue. Keep your eye out for Graham’s story coming up in Dark Horse Presents 7, as well.

Marvel's Ultimate Line Include Free Downloads

ultsm2011006-top
DC Comics has been garnering lots of media buzz, heightened awareness and increased sales on the heels of its recent New 52 reboot. Along with new re-imaginings of Superman and Wonder Woman, the publisher began making digital copies of its entire line available on the same day as the print versions. Moreover, every issue of the re-launched Justice League lets buys get that digital copy for free, via a code you can use in the company’s Comixology storefront.

The strategy basically amounts to ‘buy it on paper, get it on your iPad,’ and now DC’s crosstown rivals at Marvel have announced that they’ll be initiating a similar strategy for their Ultimate Comics line. You’ve been able to buy digital copies of many Marvel books on the same day of release of the print versions for a while now, but you’ve had to decide between one version or another. This new Ultimate development lets consumers have both in one shot. An interview by David Brothers at Comics Alliance gets into the specifics and notes one important difference between DC and Marvel’s pricing. DC’s digital titles drop down in price after a month but Marvel’s rep says they have no plans for that present. As disparaging as some gamers may be to titles released for mobile and tablets, content deals like this make devices like the iPad, Kindle Fire or Nook Color more attractive than a 3DS or PSP. Head on over to Comics Alliance for the full interview.

Taymor Sues Spider-Man Musical Producers

r
Just when the superhero musical Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark was settling into its long run after troubled beginnings, the show has been dealt another blow - ex director Julie Taymor is suing the pants of the producers. According to Hollywood Reporter, Taymor claims the show is still using her work without compensation. Her attorney says "Ms. Taymor regrets that the producers’ actions have left her no choice but to resort to legal recourse to protect her rights.” Taymor left the show back in March, and the whole thing seems like sour grapes now that the show is actually getting positive reviews.

Bucky's Back, Tim Eats His Words

Yesterday I was a little hasty in declaring that Winter Soldier would, most definitely, be about a new winter soldier and not Bucky at all. According to Marvel’s Next Big Thing blog, while their will be other winter soldiers in the book, Bucky will be the main man. Brubaker described the book, saying “This is me trying to create a book that is James Bond meets Splinter Cell in the Marvel Universe.” Can anyone say AWESOME?! Anyway, I promised I would eat my words. So here I am, eating them. Literally.

Criminal to be Adapted to Film by Brubaker

coward_150
The first arc of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ crime noir series ‘Criminal’ is set to be adapted to film by Brubaker himself for Hunting Lane Films. Variety reports that David Slade is set to direct. "'Coward' was just a great modern story," Slade said. "It harkens back to an era of crime stories where there's really a gritty reality to it, but there's a kind of underworld haze of noir. It's not like we have to reinvent the material, to figure it out, because it already works."

Will Watchmen 2 Happen?

watchmen-2
There’s been a heap of buzz about DC doing a prequel to Watchmen, with mixed reactions. Bleeding Cool thinks it’s happening. Dave Gibbons has been attached to the project, which surprises me, because even though he hasn’t been quite as outspoken as Alan Moore, he certainly has expressed a desire for the original 12 issue series to remain untarnished. The trouble is DC smells money, and a bit of extra cash never goes astray in the struggling industry. Is nothing sacred?

Judge Dredd: Trouble in Post-Production

Dredd
The LA times reported that Judge Dredd director Pete Travis was given the flick during Post-production. Writer-Producer Alex Garland was going to take his place in the editing room. It seems, however, some kind of collaboration between Travis and Garland has been going on since the outset. Here’s the statement released by the pair:
"During all stages of the filmmaking, 'Dredd' has been a collaboration between a number of dedicated creative parties.  From the outset we decided on an unorthodox collaboration to make the film.  This situation has been misinterpreted.  To set the record straight, Pete was not fired and remains a central part of the collaboration, and Alex is not seeking a co-director credit.  We are all extremely proud of the film we have made, and respectfully suggest that it is judged on viewing when its released next year."

Eric Powell Illustrates Huck Finn

CBR spoke to Eric Powell about his upcoming work illustrating Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Here’s an excerpt:
1317329874
I see. You're adding illustrations to the novel, rather than adapting it as a comic. Why take this approach?
Well, that's what was suggested to me by Chris. If he had said a comic, I would have just said no. Too much work. My schedule is pretty busy with "The Goon."
How many illustrations are included? Is it every other page, only select scenes, etc.? And are there spot illustrations or are they all full-page?
Around 20. These are full page drawings.
How do you choose which scenes to illustrate, and how do you determine how much story to pack into each single image?
I just picked out scenes that really resonated to me. You really can't put too much into a book illustration. You have to pick a moment in time to freeze frame. If you try to put in every little nuance, you lose the power of the image in minutia.
From a character design standpoint, how do you go about working through what Huck and Jim look like, how they move, etc.?
Being a young southern kid in the late '70s, I'm familiar with the look of poor, dirty children. I think I can do a decent representation of Huck. But I'm going more for establishing atmosphere than to painstakingly point out how the characters should look. I want to evoke the feeling of a riverbank rather than draw a historically accurate riverboat that shows off how good I use photo reference.

A 7 Year Old Weighs in on the New Starfire

"I can see almost all of her boobs."
"And?"
"Well she is on the beach in her bikini. But…"
"But?"
"But, she's not relaxing or swimming. She's just posing a lot." *my daughter appears uncomfortable*
"Anything else?"
"Well, she's not fighting anyone. And not talking to anyone really. She's just almost naked and posing."
